ReplyDelete1. The Go — “Invisible Friends” b/w “Yer Stoned Italian Cowboy”
I’d be remorse to not put the “Invisible Friends” single that was released by Cass Records and The Go earlier this year at the top of my list. John Krautner is my favorite songwriter, local or worldwide, by far and the A-side of this piece of vinyl is the perfect example of his talent.
2. The Black Lips — Good Bad Not Evil
More psych Beatles meets Back From the Grave garage from evereyone’s favorite Atlanta kids. Including the holy trinity of “O Katrina!,” “Cold Hands” and “Bad Kids,” GBNE received the most spins of any album this year and I love it to death.
3. King Louie/Mark Sultan/King Khan
I couldn’t leave these records out of my list because they’re all deserving. Louie’s “Gypsy Switch” is essential listening, Sultan’s Sultanic Verses rules my world and Khan’s “What Is?” is one of the years best albums for sure. Check them out.
4. The White Stripes — Conquest EP
I got a fever and the only thing that can cure it is more “Conquest.” On this new EP you get the Icky Thump version, an acoustic Marachi-fied version and three other new songs. The easy B-side favorite is “It’s My Fault for Being Famous” which is an indie answer to Nickelback’s “Rock Star.”
5. Soulja Boy — “Crank Dat”
It’s undeniable the power of Soulja Boy and his tune, “Crank Dat.” It was inescapable from the first moment I heard it 80 times in a row up at my friends’ house at State and I still don’t turn it off when it comes on the radio today. This is the first time I actually tried to learn a dance for any song.
6. The Go — Howl on the Haunted Beat You Ride
I like The Go. Can you tell? They make 3 appearences on a list of 10 records. Anyway, great album from Detroit's greatest band right now. I love that people thought they were washed up and then the boys stuck this gem in their face.
7. Tin Knocker — "Power Me Up" b/w "Tired of You"
I regret not putting this up higher. It had the single greatest packaging I believe I've ever seen in a 7 inch release or maybe any vinyl release ever. Between the bonus CD-R, the race way pass and the beautiful smelling laquered cover that I enjoy everytime I pull the single out, it is a perfect little package. Oh and the record is pretty fucking great too. I love that this is catching around $40 bucks on Ebay. It is now probably my most valuable single. Thanks Jack White!
8. The Go - Whatcha Doin
This record came out in 1999 I wanna say and I probably picked it up in CD form in my formative teenage years. I've put it on this list because I finally found it for a reasonable price on vinyl and have nearly completed my Go collection. Thanks must go again to Jack White for jacking, sorry for the bad pun, up the price this thing goes for on Ebay. Thanks again Jack! Now if I could only get a vinyl version of Supercuts everything would be grand.
9. Arctic Monkeys - "Brianstorm" b/w "Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend"
I hate being that dick record nerd who puts singles in their top tens, but it's really what I have become. Sorry. Anyway I'm not even really that fond of the A-side of this single, "Brianstorm." What I do like is the Arctic Monkeys infusing Dizzee Rascal into their already interesting mix of Buzzcocks meets trip-hop. Dizzee goes off on this song and got my hopes up for what turned out to be a lackluster record. With that being said, it's the Arctic Monkeys and they can't do wrong. Right again Mr. Blackwell.
10. Vampire Weekend- S/T
I rarely fall into the trap of blogosphere hype. Yet, there is something about Vampire Weekend that is ultimately interesting to me. I don't exactly know what "Yacht Rock" is, I'm assuming music played on a yacht, but nonetheless there is an extreme charm to "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance" and "One(Blake's Got A New Face)."

ReplyDeleteThe Stripes were one of my highest expectations for 2007 and they made it. Icky Thump is one of their best records, from the cover to the sound to the public. The Parisian show burnt like hell. However Arcade Fire and Editors were closer to me this year, can't tell why. It's all so subjective, indeed.

ReplyDelete1. i was not aware that tyvek had even released a full length, thought it'd just been singles. so is fast metabolism the tour cd-r they never gave me a copy of, or what?
2. how come you only worked at the pressing plant for 3 days? sounds cool to me. (re: arthur list)
