I Finally Figured out What Song Has Been in My Head for the Past 14 Months...

"Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz.
Dirtbombs had a fly-in, fly-out show in Edmonton in September '05. We were put up in a hotel slightly fancier than we're used to. There was a nice view of whatever river it is that goes through Edmonton. I was surprised there were no clearly visible streets named Gretzky. I didn't bring anything with me besides drumsticks, toothbrush and deodorant. Tossed the stix in Pantano's bag and kept the brush and Odorno in my jean jacket pocket. I was chuffed. Troy said "oh aren't you just such a poet!" He jests because he loves.

Anyjunk, in the hotel I was struck with the crippling feeling of a melody getting stuck in my head and not being able to identify said melody. All I could really figure out was something in the general vicinity of "it's coming on, it's going on."

I was almost certain it was a Beat Happening lyric. I could just envision Calvin Johnson's baritone bellowing manhandle the couplet. A mental flip through all the Beat Happening records left me clueless.

I then thought of Beck. Ah yes, Beck can usually be counted on to save the day. In a fit of lying to myself, I was convinced I'd just subconsciously jumbled the brief lead-up to the chorus in "E-Pro". Yeah...that's where it came from. Problem temporarily solved.
Once I came home and actually listened to "E-Pro" I still wasn't satisfied. But I had to play it off. If i focused any longer it would drive me mad.

So cut to two days ago, discussion turns to Gorillaz' albums. I start singing Dan the Automator's "ha ha HA HA ha" from "Feel Good Inc." and am then told not that one, the other one. So I quickly shift into Damon Albarn's yodel on "Clint Eastwood". The exact lyrics (according to the first bullshit site to pop up on Google) are...
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad

I got sunshine, in a bag

I'm useless, but not for long

The future is coming on

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad

I got sunshine, in a bag

I'm useless, but not for long

The future is coming on

It's coming on

It's coming on

It's coming on
Eureka! I had found it. I tried not to let on, but deep inside I knew I'd finally laid that demon to rest. Maybe the problem was that I don't own either of the Gorillaz records. I don't care as there is still no feeling better than actually figuring out your own brain. Other songs that have occupied the same territory are/were: the Screws "Valley", Vue "Find Your Home", Verbena "Hot Blood" and what I'm still not positive is Sonic Youth's "Karen Koltrane". This unwieldy record collection has still yet to best me. I can conqueror all.
